CHURCH IN 90 SECONDS
In Proverbs chapter 25 verses 21 and 22, God’s Word says:
“If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them a drink. You will make them burn with shame, and The Lord will reward you.” GNB
Have you ever tried being nice to people when they treat you like dirt? It’s actually a lot of fun. They simply don’t know what to do. Their own words turn bitter in their mouths; you can see the quizzical look on their faces.
Even the world knows you can “kill ’em with kindness.” But why would you? For starters it’s very liberating for you. When you don’t let others determine the way you’re going to act, freedom suddenly washes over you like cool water on a hot day. You realize that you stayed your course and pleased The Lord. You know instantly: “Hey! I got it right.”
Jesus went so far as to say that we should LOVE our enemies, and pray for the ones that persecute us.
Ya, but He was God. He sure was. Fully. But He was also fully man. Tempted in all ways like other men. You mean He was tempted to cuss ’em out and punch ’em in the nose? Yep. Why didn’t He? ‘ Cause He was here to show us how to do things right. How to be like Him; not Him be like us. Jesus didn’t send mixed signals. He said to do unto others as you would HAVE them do unto you; not do unto others BEFORE they do it unto you, then beat feet outta Dodge before they can get you back.
Jesus had the wisdom to stop the madness; the constant one up-man ship. That crazy mess never ends. That’s gang mentality. They kill one of ours, we kill two of theirs. The violence, consequently, never stops. Only escalates.
In our little circles of influence, revenge works in the same tail-chasing way. “Round and round it goes, where it stops, God only knows.” And He does know. “That way leads to death,”His Word says.
Death of peace.
Death of joy.
Death of happiness. Death of friendships. Death of family ties.
Death of neighborliness.
Death of rest and relaxation.
Death of team work.
Death of the willingness to even get out of bed in the morning.
And all that death is just for today. You get a fresh truckload of death dumped on you tomorrow as well! And the next day. And the next. And the…….
STOP! Enough already. Dr. F.B. Meyer, a great man of God who lived about 100 years ago, said of Archbishop Leighton of England, another great man of God: “To do him an injury was to secure his lasting friendship.” You see, he would kill you with kindness until you couldn’t help but stop treating him bad and become his friend. He would love you into loving him.
It’s the love of God that draws men to repentance. You can’t hate somebody into the Kingdom. You gotta love ’em in.
It’s not our natural fleshly reaction to return love for hate. And that’s a good thing. Because we aren’t supposed to live like natural fleshly men. We’re supposed to live like Spiritual men and women. Because that’s what we are. Made in HIS image and likeness. Turning “haters ” into ” lovers.”
Go ahead. Have fun. Flip the script!
